16日深夜、福島県沖で発生した地震は最大震度６強を観測した。東北新幹線の長期不通を余儀なくされる中、高速道路は１日半で復旧。東北地方の大動脈が確保された。
ＮＥＸＣＯ東日本では鋭意応急復旧に努め、18日正午には常磐道・南相馬～新地間の復旧ですべての通行止めが解除された。
