本格的な夏の観光シーズン到来を目前に控え、紀勢自動車道・南紀田辺ＩＣ～南紀白浜ＩＣ間（延長14㌔）が12日、開通した。残る南紀白浜ＩＣ～すさみ南ＩＣ間（延長24㌔）については「紀の国わかやま国体」が開催される９月の開通を目指し、着々と整備が進められている。
和歌山県上富田町の「道の駅くちくまの」で行われた開通式典では、森昌文近畿地方整備局長の式辞に続き、仁坂吉伸和歌山県知事が「県民にとって高速道路は待望久しいものであり、紀勢道の延伸で活性化へのチャンスが大きく広がった」と挨拶。「紀勢道は“命の道”でもあり、救援隊を送る道として絶対に必要な高速道路」と述べた。また来賓出席した二階俊博自民党総務会長は「紀南一周、全線高速道路でつなぐことに向け頑張ろう」と更なる延伸へ力強く語った。
本線上で行われたセレモニーでは、世耕弘成参議院議員、鶴保庸介参議院議員、浮島智子衆議院議員や沿線首長らも加わりテープカット、くす玉開披と進み、関係者を乗せた車両が通り初めした。

開通前の５日に行われたプレイベントでは、サイクリング大会に約５００人、フリーウォークには約３５００人が参加。思い思いに装いで走り、歩き、高速道路の感触を満喫した。
